Social commentator and former clinical psychologist Bettina Arndt said the fact Australia is leading the world in women’s safety should be celebrated.

Ms Anrdt said the results disprove a dominant ‘anti-male narrative determined to paint our men as dangerous to women’.

‘The way the media has treated this report’s findings shows how common that anti-male agenda is in this country,’ she said.

‘There’s absolutely no room in this agenda for celebrating good Aussie blokes or boasting about how well they treat the women in their lives.

‘The story has been barely mentioned in the mainstream media, which normally loves stories about our country being the best in the world.

‘Just look at the way the media reacted late last year when official statistics had revealed there’s no epidemic of domestic violence.

‘In fact over the last decade there’s been no increase in women being abused by their partners.

‘When the Australian Bureau of Statistics released this data from the 2016 Personal Safety Survey last November it went totally unreported.’

The New World Wealth report based its findings on the percentage of women in each country who have been victims of serious crimes over the past year.

Crimes considered in the study were rape, slavery of women, trafficking of women, and general assaults on women such as physical assaults and acid attacks.

Countries with unreliable crime statistics were excluded from the top ten.

Ms Arndt said that made for a ‘difficult comparison’ between countries but the results should not be ignored.

The report noted a correlation between historic wealth growth and women’s safety levels.

‘Women’s safety is one of the best ways to gauge a country’s long term wealth growth potential,’ the report said.

‘We expect emerging markets with good women’s safety levels to be some of the world’s top performers in terms of wealth growth over the next 10 years.’

‘The least safe countries in the world for women in 2017 included the likes of Somalia, Sudan, Iraq and Syria.

‘Some of the world’s big economies such as Nigeria also made the list. Notably, most of these markets have performed poorly in terms of wealth growth over the past few years, which is probably linked to their low woman safety levels.

‘Furthermore, many of the migrant boats crossing the Mediterranean to Europe had a large number of citizens from these countries on them which shows that people are fleeing these countries in search of safer places to live.’
